Legal Transcription:


Legal transcriptionists transcribe legal dictation,  creating legal documents for attorneys and other entities. A legal transcriptionist must have a good command of legal terminology and how different documents are formatted. It is well suited to working from home since the files can easily be moved electronically.




  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Fast and accurate keyboarding speed

  • Knowledge of law and legal terminology

  • Ability to edit and proof legal documents

  • Extensive knowledge of the English language




As a legal transcriptionist,  your day to day responsibilities might differ. A typical day could be going to a court hearing and listening to a testimonial. Your job is to critically analyze the information and prepare a well written transcribed document. As a legal transcriptionist,  you are required to honor the confidentiality agreement. You will be handling critical and privileged information.


Legal Transcription Career Outlook:


The U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics does not report salary information for legal transcriptionist,  but it does for court reporters.


  • Median annual salary (2010) was $47, 700 per year,  $22.93 hourly

  • Expected job growth of 14% from 2010-2020
